Marquetry is the traditional craft of making pictures out of thin slices of timber veneer, or, more poetically, painting with wood. The technique was developed in the late seventeenth century in Europe and was brought to England by Huguenot craftsmen. It was, and still is, used to make highly decorative surfaces on tables, cabinets and chests. Your tutor for this week's masterclass is John Cross, a highly experienced furniture conservator, with a wealth of experience in making and restoring marquetry using hand techniques. You will learn how to select different timbers and make a parcel of veneers, how to saw them, how to create shading, and how to assemble and fix them to create pictures.

Class size is restricted to six students to allow for plenty of individual attention. You will use a variety of veneers in this class, the cost of which is included in the course fee. The session runs for five continuous days, Monday to Friday, from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
